Operational State Analysis Of Incremental Encoder

- Oct 16, 2017 -

Encoders can provide feedback for motion in a variety of applications, such as placing a patient in the appropriate position of a magnetic resonance imager or filling a beverage at a speed of 300 bottles per minute. The user must consider some of the most important application features when choosing the Encoder: Is it tracking the linear motion or the rotational motion? Incremental Encoder

Using an optical encoder or a magnetic encoder? In addition to the successful implementation of professional applications, users should also consider whether the choice of incremental encoder or absolute encoder-even with the same sensor mechanism, the performance of the two encoders are also significantly different. To achieve a successful application you need to understand all the relevant characteristics of the two encoders and make the right choice.Incremental Encoder When an incremental encoder is moved, the encoder produces a binary pulse flow proportional to the axis rotation speed (Rotary encoder) or motion distance (linear encoder). When the optical encoder is used, the specific pattern of the encoder or the linear band which is placed between the LED light source and the light sensor can alternately guide or block the beam, resulting in an analog signal, and the extra circuit (usually the onboard ASIC) converts the analog signal to a square wave.

A magnetic encoder can operate in a variety of mechanisms, but it rotates a magnetic field, resulting in a voltage pulse or a change in the resistance that can be converted to a pulse.Incremental Encoder

Single-channel encoder is simple, durable and cost-economical, but it has an important flaw, that is, the direction of movement can not be determined. To determine the direction of motion requires more output of the encoder (usually a two-channel design with phase difference of 90° to achieve the channel "A" and "B" independent output). Since the signal output of a dual-channel encoder has 2 ascending along and 2 descent along, it is sometimes also called an orthogonal encoder. The motion direction determines which channel reaches the high level first, which makes the processor easily monitor the direction of movement. The operator can increase the encoder resolution by triggering a two-channel pulse front and back-up to 4 times times the maximum.Incremental Encoder
